When your family needs more protection than a standard Will can provide
“What will happen to them when I’m no longer here?”
It’s a question many parents and carers quietly carry, and it rarely gets asked out loud. We understand it — through professional experience, and through personal family experience too.
Leaving an inheritance outright to a vulnerable beneficiary can remove their entitlement to means-tested benefits and care funding overnight. Planned properly, the same money can support them for life without ever putting that at risk.

The person behind it
This isn’t just my profession. It’s personal.
I’m Alan Mountford-Brown. I founded The Northern Legacy Co. to help individuals and families put the right plans in place — to protect the people they love, preserve what they’ve built, and prepare for the future.
Having a vulnerable loved one in my own family, I understand the questions that keep parents and carers awake at night. That understanding shapes every recommendation I make.
I don’t believe estate planning should be complicated or intimidating. I believe in listening first, explaining clearly, and building a plan around your circumstances — because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to protect a family.

Vulnerable Beneficiaries
Protecting what matters most: my personal approach to vulnerable family planning
My brother Gary has Angelman Syndrome. Living alongside him has shown me why families with a vulnerable loved one cannot afford to leave planning until tomorrow — and it shapes the way I work today.

Family Protection
Why legacy planning is about more than writing a will
A will is an important part of planning for the future — but for most families it is only one piece of a much bigger picture. Capacity, guardianship, a vulnerable beneficiary and inheritance tax all sit alongside it.

Wills
What a will actually does — and what it doesn't
A will decides who inherits. It does not decide who looks after your children's money, and it does nothing at all while you are alive. Here is where the line sits.
